Your Questions Answered
Explore our frequently asked questions to find answers to common queries about solar energy.
Is my home a good site for solar?
What is a Solar Energy System Design Brief?
A solar design brief or proposal explains the system an installer recommends for your property. Ask for a panel layout, equipment makes and models, system capacity, estimated annual generation and an explanation of shading and other expected losses.
The quote should clearly identify the total price, included work, permits, utility connection costs, warranties and anticipated maintenance. If it includes batteries, ask which circuits they can support during an outage and for how long.
Compare the assumptions behind savings estimates, including future electricity prices, panel degradation, financing and equipment replacement. Future electricity rates and savings are not guaranteed; ask how the results change under more conservative assumptions.
Is the design process for an on-grid system the same as that for an off-grid system?
Both designs start with your electricity needs, site conditions and plans for future electrification. A grid-connected system works alongside utility supply and is designed around the applicable connection and credit rules.
Grid-connected solar alone generally does not supply power during an outage. If backup is a priority, ask for a system specifically designed to operate safely when the grid is down, including suitable storage and isolation equipment.
An off-grid system must meet the property’s needs without normal utility supply. Ask the designer to assess seasonal generation, peak loads, battery capacity, backup generation and maintenance. These requirements need careful planning with a qualified installer.
Can I install my own solar energy system?
Some parts of a solar installation can be done by anyone, but anything involving electricity should be handled by an electrician. On- and off-grid solar PV systems must be installed by a Red Seal electrician and inspected by Nova Scotia Power or local electrical inspectors.
In general, racking and mounting panels, building a ground mount frame (depending on local building code), and trench digging (if required) can all be done by someone with the skills and safety equipment/certifications to do so.
My building's roof needs replacing soon. Does it make sense to combine the installations?
If your roof will need replacement soon, ask a roofer and solar installer to coordinate the work before the array is installed. This can avoid the cost of removing and reinstalling panels later.
Ask them to confirm the roof condition, structural capacity, mounting compatibility and warranty requirements. Solar panels do not make roofing last indefinitely; the roof and mounting system still need to be suitable for the installation.
