Solar Nova Scotia Study to Accelerate Solar Energy Industry

Solar Nova Scotia (SNS) is leading a study of the expanding solar energy industry in Atlantic Canada, with an eye to accelerating growth and business opportunities. SNS is a not-for-profit society that provides education and research to facilitate adoption of solar energy. We envision a future powered by all renewable energy sources.
With support from the Province of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), SNS will survey businesses and customers in the solar energy space across Atlantic Canada. The goals are to estimate the economic activity, costs, benefits, and supply chain opportunities, and make recommendations for accelerated growth of the solar energy industry.
The chair of SNS said, “This study is long overdue for Atlantic Canada and will contribute to its adoption of affordable renewable energy. The results of this study should point the way to a robust solar industry and benefits for the public.”
“Building on the Atlantic Growth Strategy’s clean growth and climate change pillar, this research will inform the development of a clean energy plan that will help stimulate economic growth, create middle class jobs, and drive innovation,” said the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.
The Government of Canada is providing Solar Nova Scotia Society with a $44,200 (non-repayable) contribution, through ACOA’s Business Development Program to support the study. The Province of Nova Scotia is contributing $35,000. SNS is putting in $8,800 from its own fundraising, to complete the $88,000 study.
Nova Scotia Energy Minister Geoff MacLellan said, “Nova Scotia continues to be a leader in reducing emissions because of our commitment to innovation and investing in clean electricity. Learning more about the potential of solar energy will help us build on our accomplishments, and deliver the cleaner energy future Nova Scotians want.”
