Solar Nova Scotia Voluntary Code of Ethics

For future registrations, each prospective corporate member of Solar Nova Scotia is to read and signify his/her agreement to adhere to the Code of Ethics below by selecting “I accept these terms” in your application form.

Corporate members of Solar Nova Scotia recognize their obligations to the general public, the consumer, the industry and related professions and industries. These obligations guide the members of the Society to conduct business and promote their products and services in a manner which assures the public health, safety and welfare through careful design, installation, operation, maintenance and dissemination of information with respect to solar energy technology, and which contributes to the professional advancement of Solar Nova Scotia. Members shall:

  1. Undertake work in compliance with applicable codes, standards and laws. It is the responsibility of the member to stay up to date, to a degree that would be considered reasonable within the industry, with developments and changes to applicable codes, standards and laws.
  2. Not falsify or permit misrepresentation of their professional qualifications (certifications achieved, license status, years in business, etc.)
  3. Undertake their operations, services and research with proper regard for the safety, health and welfare of workers and the public, and for the protection of the environment.
  4. Present honestly the capabilities, performance, and energy savings potential of solar products and systems.
  5. Employ properly trained personnel to perform duties to professional standards.
  6. Offer and honour clear and understandable warranties that comply with all applicable provincial and federal regulations.
  7. Members shall be guided in all their professional relations by the highest standards of integrity, admit and accept their own errors when proven wrong, and take appropriate action to correct the error.
  8. Members shall not attempt to injure, maliciously or falsely, directly or indirectly, the professional reputation and practices of other members, and not untruthfully criticize other members.
  9. Members shall actively participate in the training of skilled trades people for the future welfare of the solar energy industry.
  10. Members shall avoid all practices which are likely to discredit the profession or deceive the public.
  11. Members shall endeavour to extend public knowledge and appreciation of solar energy systems, their achievements and effect on the environment.

Solar Nova Scotia Voluntary Code of Ethics for Directors and Officers

To show solidarity with and support for its membership, each Director and Officer of Solar Nova Scotia is to be held to the same standards as its member by also agreeing to a Code of Ethics that are similar in character and spirit to the Code agreed to by its corporate members. Directors and Officers of Solar Nova Scotia shall:

  1. Manage and supervise the affairs of Solar Nova Scotia to the best of his/her ability and without consideration of personal matters or affairs.
  2. Avoid conflicts of interest, whether professional or otherwise, when acting in his/her capacity as a Director and/or Officer.
  3. Keep reasonably up to date on industry information and policy, released through either the private or public sector, on the use of solar power and energy.
  4. When and if asked, present, to the best of his/her knowledge, honestly the capabilities, performance, and energy savings potential of solar products and systems, and, if not known, refer members and the general public to an appropriate source of the information sought.
  5. Directors and Officers shall be guided in all their duties and undertakings by the highest standards of integrity.
  6. Directors and Officers may work in the solar industry, but shall not use their position to injure, maliciously or falsely, directly or indirectly, the professional reputation and practices of members, and not untruthfully criticize other members.
  7. Directors and Officers shall avoid all practices which are likely to discredit the profession or deceive the public.
  8. Directors and Officers shall reasonably endeavour where and when possible to extend public knowledge and appreciation of solar energy systems, their achievements and effect on the environment.
